The Apology of Socratic Debt
Socrates is considered one of the most brilliant examples of erudition. It is ironic that a man with the power of argument such as Socrates may not have considered himself to be the most influential of men. Nor did he openly consider himself to be of the wisest,as far as the records of Plato, that have been preserved and shown in such a widespread and academic manner.
Regardless, the legend of the “man”, Socrates, has reached idyllic status and he is prided as an example for all philosophers to follow. Perhaps the ideal of Socrates is an elaboration of what the ancients considered to be the immutable “idea” in the form of the human substance that populated the earth in its anthropocentric ignorance of the “thing in itself” or the carcass, noumena.
Due to his insistent elaboration and relentless questioning of the vacuous knowledge of those who claim they are knowledgeable in full, he attracted a number of the philosophers and youth of Athens. The followers were in search of the pinnacles of cognitive economy through a fetishized pre-epistemology of chaotic rationality.
These friends as well as enemies who sought Socrates in order to challenge what some considered his wisdom would lead the observer down a winding path of what has become lineated.Socrates challenged others thinking and in turn he was accused of being a corrupter of the minds of the youth of Athens and his peers who would either follow or revile Socrates.
The nature of the ancient remnants of Plato’s dialogues that included Socrates continuously reveals a figure of a character that was steeped in the speech of locating phenomena in the outreaching clutches of the mental rift and the illusory space and time of reason. I say this in the sense of Kant’s overturned dichotomies of phenomena and noumena and the relation between the shadows in the cave and the outside which was considered in “The Republic” of Plato. The illusion of the real, the veil of ideation and promiscuous cerebreality, all sought to conquer those who could not conquer themselves. That is the non-method of Socrates, not a self-deprecating as the Cynic, yet almost sarcastically disarming himself as he was of becoming, an explosive set to detonate only to choke on hemlock.
Furthering the potent envy and jealousy of non-knowledge, the ancient line of thought of virtue emerges as the Delphic Oracle itself had “spoken” and had riddled that Socrates was the wisest man. And it seems as if his accusers were disturbed by this implication. It is for these reasons that Socrates was brought to trial in Athens and although he explicated in speech the contents of an argument in his own defense, his relentless questions that asserted the thrall of uncertainty, it seems as if it was a modest attempt to appeal to the Athenian state through self-denial and defiant allegiance.
Socrates was a detailed speaker. He had seldom left any supposed truth unturned. He claimed that he was seeking truth and that he questioned in order to find the truth. The truth is elusive and a special effect of sorts that observers tend to hallucinate collectively. It’s a wonder that he stopped there and did not mar the state. Or did he cease at nothing? The notion that he would question any claim to truth or knowledge played a major factor in the accusation that he was a corrupter of his “followers”. It can even be considered that he was the leader of a cult although he apparently did not think that he was such a figure. Regardless, his followers and challengers always would receive the gift of the doubt of certain knowledge upon arriving and leaving the seemingly fictional presence of the great Socrates.
According to Plato’s dialogues, Socrates leadership status, unofficial but as it stands it was an exaggerated assumption, may be an unintended consideration in the eyes of the man himself. But, in examining the presented skeleton of language and artifacts that was Socrates, one must question the man himself if at all possible. That is, if he existed as such, as well as the positions and words attributed to his accusers. Of course the elaborate dialogues of the favoring Plato seem to feed into the man and myth of Socrates. They contribute to the elevation of Socrates as the greatest philosopher in the Occidental tradition. It is now clear that what he spoke of, in the unspoken was an unquivering hand and its attempts to clasp death through the illusion that is mind.
I presume that if events and persons such as those in the Apology dialogue were to emerge today, there would also be a number of detractors with their accusations much like in Plato’s dialogue. The difference one faces in comparing the two ages, both that of ancient Greece and the current Information Age, may lead the inquisitive to think that the complexified myriad of situations in which monadic egos have been reproduced exponentially may result in less than death. It is but a slowly irrupting digestion in the dead intestine of the boy inside the wolf he cried over. The prolongation of media simulations that would be available to both a present day juridical court situation and the less than deified non-sensation that are present day philosophers seems to only lead to a Socratic machines infinite death by the hemlock of self-important overdose on cannibalized thought.
Socrates never laid claim to knowledge and the men who challenged his supposed wisdom were intent on proving that they themselves were “in possession” of such knowledge claims. As I mentioned, it would be not altogether unreasonable that Socrates was brought to trial because of jealousy that was brought about by his feigned ignorance. The accusers were intent on proving that Socrates was the source of corruption because of this favoring of unspoken emptiness and they plotted a trial in which the character of Socrates was to be destroyed. It was only as immortal as the media of which the name Socrates appears. Perhaps he was to give his life in vain, or that is was all for the democracy that the slaves of Athens could never obtain without the whips of their masters powerful ignorance, both Socratic and of the juridical sort.
Careful argumentation on the part of Socrates was rendered in his self defense. He had claimed that he did not possess knowledge and that, unlike the Sophists, he would not charge payment to the youth who had followed him for knowledge he did not have in his possession. Clearly he was either being sarcastic or he presumed that the cognitive commodity fetish was not worth the money that the sophists had received for imparting their ignorance upon unwilling epistemic vessels of incompetence.
Overall, I feel I have repeated myself enough that Socrates tried to pretend that he was not the wise man of ancient Athens. His words convicted him of both knowledge and ignorance and the illusion of the durability of accident and resilient artifacts on which Plato inscribed the legendary leader who would not follow himself. This occurs all the while, claiming that one should “Know thyself”. I feel that his mark is indelible but at the same time that he should have escaped in order to reason another day and pass down a greater legacy to meditate upon, criticize through query, and suspend frivolous judgments when wading in its wake. The enemies of Socrates were envious of his nothingness. -
